Beverage matters

On December 8 the Raw Milk Freedom Riders are serving – gasp! – raw milk and cookies from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Independence Park, 3850 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, Illinois, 60618.  The raw milk will have been transported across state lines, having come from Wisconsin, thus potentially garnering the attention of the FDA, which forbids anything regarding raw milk but especially the transportation of it across state lines.  It remains to be seen if the FDA will show up to help save these people from themselves, but if I had to put money on it I’m betting they will.

In news that matters more to me here at home, a piece of legislation now sits on the desk of our really awful governor, Bev Purdue, which would allow breweries of all sizes to have tasting rooms/beer gardens in which to sell their product.  Currently only breweries that brew less than 25,000 barrels annually are allowed to have beer gardens/tasting rooms.  No doubt the law will potentially benefit larger breweries, but it will also allow our craft breweries to expand, no?

My favorite quote from an otherwise really poorly written article comes from Jesse Clark of Big Boss brewery of Raleigh who stated:  “The Bud drinkers are always going to be Bud drinkers, and the craft drinkers are always going to drink better beer.”  So true.

What I’d really love to see is the repeal of the blue laws and the privatization of ABC sales, but I’m not holding my breath on either issue.  I probably have more chance of getting arrested while drinking some raw milk.
