Apparently the government, in all its various forms. I’ve lately been reading of government raids on various places around the country regarding raw milk, the most recent of which was a raid on an Amish farm in Pennsylvania on April 20.
Why is the government so keen on protecting the public from the horrors of drinking unpasteurized milk? Who knows. But is it really keeping us safe? I somehow doubt it, especially when you weigh how many people in this country get food borne illnesses each year – 1 in 6 – presumably from consuming products other than raw milk.
I’m not one of those who argues that pasteurization is bad or evil, quite the opposite – it’s had its place and has no doubt kept our food supply safer. But for fuck’s sake, what’s the big deal about consuming something raw? We need to ask ourselves why government officials are so fixated on what the citizens of this country are consuming, especially when they raid Amish farms and raw food collectives with guns drawn.
Anyway, here’s a little piece that Reason.tv put together about some raids on the west coast that have been taking place since 2008 against the aforementioned private raw food club. Enjoy.
